Communications & Policy Development Manager

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee general CanCham communications strategy
  • Direction over all CanCham communication channels, including but not limited to WeChat, Website, LinkedIn, Weibo, and other channels
  • Responsible for marketing direction, planning, and information dissemination
  • Responsible for communication with Members in support of sponsorships, event participation, and additional matters as required
  • Work in tandem with CanCham Membership staff to identify potential member needs in relation to government policy and report findings to the Board
  • Work with the Executive Director and the Board Members to develop a government relations and policy engagement strategy, and define milestones to measure success
  • Support Chamber initiatives related to policy, communications, and government engagement
  • Keep up to date on relevant government policy and priority changes, regularly brief the Board, and take instruction regarding any potential action plan
  • Receive, disseminate, and forward new policy information to all CanCham members on a regular basis
  • Create and keep in constant update a list of contacts at various government agencies relevant to the Chamber of Commerce in its dealings
  • Facilitate meetings and meeting agendas, between various government organizations, as well as NGOs, and CanCham Board Members & Executive Director
  • Attend above said meetings along with Board Members & Executive Director
  • Consult with and advise CanCham Board of Directors and Executive Director regarding the targeting and maintenance of relations with important government officials
  • Lead drafting of CanCham advocacy positions, and identify relevant government bodies to advocate to
  • Support drafting of MOUs and cooperation proposals with government departments and relevant Chinese organizations
  • Work in tandem with CanCham Events staff, with Board feedback, to identify potential invitees and guests of honor for CanCham events
  • Attend CanCham Board meetings as minute taker as needed
  • Supervise communications staff, including but not limited to hiring and managing interns under their direction
  • Overall output split is predicted to be 75% communications and member engagement / 25% policy development

Education and experience:

  • Education from prominent universities in communications, policy, international trade, business management or related fields
  • Minimum 2 years relevant experience is preferred
  • Experience managing contacts and business relationships, or have experience in public service or experience of interacting with Chinese government departments and/or foreign businesses operating in China
  • Familiarity with international trade dynamics and related polices and regulations

Required skills, knowledge and abilities:

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, understanding how to build and maintain a professional network of contacts
  • Excellent language skills in English and Mandarin preferred, both written and oral
  • Superior organizational, planning and management skills with strategic mindset
  • Problem solving skills and flexibility
  • Good word processing and computer skills
  • Good working knowledge of policy, regulations and laws relating to international trade
  • Ability to prioritize own workload and take initiative
  • Ability to work and contribute as a valuable team member
  • Ability to work with and maintain confidential information or information of a sensitive nature
