Manitoba Comes to Shanghai:
Sowing the Seeds of Agri-Trade Cooperation
On the morning of June 18th, high above Shanghai’s skyline in the 40th-floor boardroom of the Kunlun Hotel, CanCham Shanghai hosted an exclusive roundtable with a visiting delegation from Manitoba — one of Canada’s leading agricultural provinces.
Leading the delegation was the Honourable Ron Kostyshyn, Manitoba’s Minister of Agriculture, joined by Deputy Minister Scott Sinclair, Director of Ministerial Affairs Chris Sanderson, and Manitoba Pork board member Scott Peters. Representing the Canadian Consulate in Shanghai were Alexandre Cérat and Claire Chen, standing alongside a group of CanCham members with deep experience navigating China’s market: Sherry and Donghai from CanCham, Dominic of Liya Solutions, Professor Daniel Araya, Andrew Zhu of Pinnacle, Kurt Lou of BMO, Xiaoye Chen of Junzejun Law, and Ian Lu of Grant Thornton.

Manitoba’s strengths in crop production, livestock, food processing, and agricultural innovation set the stage for a candid exchange. The delegation came with real questions: What does the business environment in East China actually look like today? What are the practical hurdles to setting up local operations? What regulatory realities should Manitoba businesses prepare for — and what does successful, sustainable market entry actually take?
CanCham’s members didn’t hold back, sharing hard-won insights from years of operating in China’s agriculture, finance, legal, and biotech sectors.
By the end of the morning, the tone in the room said as much as the words. The Manitoba delegation and the Consulate expressed genuine appreciation for CanCham’s role in making the conversation possible — and there was a clear sense that Manitoba isn’t just testing the waters. They’re thinking seriously about what a lasting presence in China could look like.
As Canada and China continue to navigate a complex trade relationship, moments like this matter: real conversations, in the room, between people who build the bridges. CanCham Shanghai looks forward to continuing to support Manitoba’s agriculture sector as this dialogue moves forward.
