The Bishop Strachan School
The Bishop Strachan School, Canada’s oldest day and boarding school for girls, is renowned for its expertise in the learning needs of girls. Established in 1867, BSS offers a rigorous academic curriculum coupled with a creative, nurturing, and an expressive approach to education. Set in Toronto’s prestigious Forest Hill neighbourhood, the sprawling campus offers an academic atmosphere in the tradition of the finest schools around the world. Well worn stone and wood echoes with the presence of thousands of girls who have passed through these halls. In the Senior School, the Advanced Placement program is offered as part of our enriched curriculum.
One hundred percent of graduating students achieve university admission, and a large number are offered places at prestigious universities in the United States, including: Harvard, MIT, Princeton, the University of Pennsylvania, Columbia, Cornell and Georgetown; as well as the United Kingdom, including: Edinburgh, the London School of Economics, St. Andrews, and Trinity College Dublin.
The 7.5 acres of living and learning space has outstanding facilities and technologies, including an indoor pool, fitness centre, 250–seat theatre, dance studio, Centre for Arts and Design, multi-media and film labs, and a 3-D Printer to teach girls engineering and computer assisted design.
Almost 80 boarders come to live at BSS from places such as Canada, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea, Japan, the Caribbean, Africa, the Middle East, Europe, and Mexico. Our Boarding Program is kept deliberately small and intentionally international for the betterment of the students.
The warm and nurturing staff make the boarding school a safe and comfortable home away from home for students. Boarding is part of the main school and provides easy access to all school facilities, many of which are used in the evenings for study and recreation.
Supervised study occurs four times a week. Students are grouped by grade on each floor. The boarders have their own dining room, and all meals are served buffet-style, with many choices to suit the needs and tastes of our international students. The mandatory nightly program runs under the supervision of the Boarding Study Advisor, a fully qualified teacher who closely monitors students progress and liaises with classroom teachers to stay informed. Professional subject tutors are available at no additional fee in match, science and English, along with specialized workshops.
Though the security of BSS students is the School’s top priority, it is balanced with their need to develop independence, and privileges are carefully related to age and responsibility. The boarding staff provide excellent supervision, and the health centre has two nurses on duty daily. Seven full-time staff members have housing in the residence.
Admission is based on previous school reports, references, and when possible, a personal interview. International applicants also take the SSAT and the TOEFL.
