Managing Director, Canada Wood

The Canada Wood Group is seeking a dynamic leader to head up its operations in China. Based in Shanghai and leading a team of promotion and technical specialist, the MD will have lead responsibility for delivering a broad suite of programming targeted at catalyzing a substantial growth market for Canadian wood in construction applications.

Strong candidates will have a background in team leadership, government relations, construction or forest industry credentials with overseas experience. Preference given to candidates with demonstrated and strong communication skills in both English and Mandarin Chinese.


  • Overall management responsibilities for operations in the Shanghai & Beijing offices including administration, financial management and contracting including a team of 30 staff plus short-term contractors.
  • Leadership planning, execution and reporting of a comprehensive set of Market Access and Market Development projects.
  • Represents member Associations of the Canada Wood Group in China with direct interaction and engagement with internal and external stakeholders including Chinese government, Canadian government and the building products industry.
  • Acts as the senior representative in China on behalf of the member Associations of the Canada Wood Group in China.
  • Responsible for drafting update reports for the board and the steering committee.
  • Provides liaison with representatives of the Canadian Federal Government, Canadian Provincial Government representatives, and other Canadian industry associations operating in China and Canada.
  • Reports to the Canada Wood President.

Abilities and Knowledge

  • A career track record with at least 10 years progressive responsibility in management and at least 5 years of senior management experience in a commercial, trade promotion agency, or industry association advocacy role such as Business Development, Marketing, Corporate Development, or Strategy.
  • Demonstrated experience leading and motivating multi-functional and multicultural teams with a focus on delivering market development programs.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the business culture of Mainland China with a minimum of 5 years experience living in country.
  • Ability to contrast and translate into effective results Canadian business and government sector practices with Mainland Chinese business practices, communication styles and government protocol.
  • Knowledge of the Canadian forestry sector. Recognizes the differences between Chinaa��s wood construction industry and the industry in Western countries.
  • Existing relationships with Canada Wooda��s Chinese and Canadian stakeholders an asset.
  • Native executive level communication and presentation skills in English and strong command of Mandarin
  • Chinese with the ability to interact and influence in both languages.
