L. Philippe Rheault becomes Consul General in Chongqing, China

L. Philippe Rheault (BA Honours [Philosophy and Political Science], McGill University, 1990; LLB, McGill University, 1994) worked in international development and as a journalist in Costa Rica prior to becoming a lawyer in Montréal in 1995. He joined the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade in 1998. He has had assignments abroad in Havana and in Beijing as second secretary, Chongqing as consul and Ulaanbaatar as counsellor and senior trade commissioner. In Ottawa, Mr. Rheault worked in trade policy and as a deputy director in the North Asia Relations division. In 2006, he took leave from the department for one year to work as a mining executive in China. In 2009, he became director for trade and investment at the Canadian Trade Office, Taipei. Mr. Rheault will be Canada’s first consul general in Chongqing.
