Position Title: Guangzhou – Senior Commercial Officer, LE-09, Alberta Guangzhou Office

Starting Annual Gross Salary:  RMB 303,976 (before tax and employee social insurance contributions; 13th month bonus and employer social insurance contributions are paid on top of the gross salary; salary is non-negotiable)

Area of selection:

This position is open to external applicants residing in China and employees occupying an indeterminate or term position in China Missions who meet all of the essential qualifications and whose applications are received by the closing date.

Short-listed candidates should be able to participate in tests and/or interviews in Guangzhou at own expense. The successful candidate will be required to relocate to Guangzhou at own expense.

Job summary: 

The Senior Commercial Officer will contribute to advancing Alberta’s global commerce interests under the direction of Alberta’s Senior Representative in Hong Kong, as part of the Department of International and Intergovernmental Relations of ALBERTA, carrying out his/her responsibilities under the auspices of the Canadian Consul General in Guangzhou as a full member of the Mission. Responsibilities include developing and sharing knowledge of the market place; providing service, advice and information to clients; building relationships with clients and local contacts; doing troubleshooting; planning and executing events as well as planning and managing budgets.

 

The Senior Commercial Officer collaborates with mission staff, other regional Alberta International Offices, Alberta international marketing and industry development groups to design and deliver programs to exploit local trade and investment opportunities for Alberta; researches and prepares both general and specific market studies and statistical reports relating to Alberta Trade and Investment activities  in the region; provides strategic advice and assists in the implementation of trade and investment promotion programs including logistical arrangements for incoming visits and other events; advises Alberta businesses, local business and Government officials; facilitates the general operations of the Alberta Guangzhou Office in coordination with mission staff, other Alberta International Offices and Government of Alberta Officials.

Mandatory requirements: 

Education: 

  • Degree from a recognized university, OR an acceptable equivalent through the combination of education and work experience.

Language:

  • Proficiency in English (reading, writing, speaking) 
  • Proficiency in Mandarin (reading, writing and speaking) 

Experience:

  • At least six years of experience in international commerce
  • At least three years of experience in managing a team of marketing and administrative personnel
  • Experience in dealing with the general public and customer/client service
  • Experience in working and liaising with Chinese government agencies and Chinese companies
  • Experience in budgeting financial forecast and managing expenses for a small office

Knowledge:

  • Extensive knowledge of international business (exporting, investment, marketing, technology transfer, etc.)
  • Knowledge of industry sectors in the Province of Alberta
  • Knowledge of industry sectors in the Eastern China region

Abilities/skills:

  • Ability to write effective business correspondence in English and Chinese
  • Ability to provide strategic advice and make recommendations
  • Ability to perform translation and interpretation from Chinese to English and vice versa

Organizational Needs:

Conditions of Employment

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid working authorization in China. Per Chinese regulations, the Embassy / Consulates can only facilitate working visas for Canadian citizens
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid “Reliability Status” security clearance

Operational Requirement:

  • Ability and willingness to work overtime on short notice as required
  • Able to travel domestically and internationally as required
