Area of Selection: 

This position is open to external applicants residing in China and employees occupying an indeterminate or term position in China Missions who meet all of the essential qualifications and whose applications are received by the closing date.

Short-listed candidates should be able to participate in tests and/or interviews in Guangzhou at own expense. The successful candidate will be required to relocate to Guangzhou at own expense.

Job summary: 

The Commercial Officer will contribute to advancing Alberta’s global commerce by, among other responsibilities, developing and sharing knowledge of the market place; providing service, advice and information to clients; building relationships with clients and local contacts; doing troubleshooting; planning and executing events as well as assisting in office planning, budgeting and reporting.

 

Under the general direction of the Senior Commercial Office, Alberta Guangzhou Office, coordinates programs to exploit local trade and investment opportunities for Alberta and promote Alberta’s interests in the local market; researches and prepares both general and specific market studies and statistical reports relating to Alberta Trade and Investment activities  in the region; advises on and assists in the implementation of trade and investment promotion programs including logistical arrangements for incoming visits and other events, using independent judgment and action; prepares written replies to inquiries on designated sectors from Alberta businesses, local business and Government officials; compiles market/ intelligence information for Alberta businesses; provides both written and oral interpretation in the Chinese language; carries out other duties as directed by the Senior Commercial Office.

Mandatory requirements: 

Education:

  • Degree from a recognized university, OR an acceptable equivalent through the combination of education and work experience.

Language:

  • Proficiency in English (reading, writing and speaking)
  • Proficiency in Mandarin (reading, writing and speaking) 

Experience:

  • At least three years’ experience in international commerce
  • Experience in dealing with the general public and customer/client service
  • Experience in working and liaising with Chinese government agencies and companies

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of international business (exporting, importing, investment, technology transfer)

Abilities/skills:

  • Ability to write professional reports and business correspondence in English and Chinese
  • Ability to research, interpret sources of information and synthesize data to respond to requests for information from clients
  • Ability to perform translation and interpretation from Chinese to English and vice versa

Asset Criteria:

Preferred standing may be given to those candidates who also meet the following:

Language:

  • Proficiency in French (reading, writing and speaking)

Experience:

  • Experience in working with visiting business and/or government delegation

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of relevant topics such as Canadian and Chinese trade and investment business environment and practices; major areas and/or sectors of international trade; and/or Chinese government and industry structures, major economic and political issues. Familiarity with the Province of Alberta

Organizational Needs:

Conditions of Employment

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid working authorization in China. Per Chinese regulations, the Embassy / Consulates can only facilitate working visas for Canadian citizens
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid “Reliability Status” security clearance

Operational Requirement:

  • Ability and willingness to work overtime on short notice as required
  • Able to travel domestically and internationally as required
