CanCham Shanghai Welcomes Northwest Territories Trade Mission to China

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) undertook a mission to China from January 12 to January 21, 2014, led by Premier Robert R. McLeod, and accompanied by Minister David Ramsay, Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment (ITI) and a number of GNWT officials and Northwest Territories (NWT) businesses in the wild fur, mining, and tourism sectors.

During the leg in Shanghai, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai organized the NWT Luncheon and Tourism Seminar on January 17, 2014 at the Shanghai Peace Hotel. These events promoted various investment opportunities and facilitated Canada-China business ties.
The 2014 GNWT mission aimed to build upon connections made during the 2012 Council of the Federation (COF) mission to China that the Premier and NWT business delegates attended with other Premiers and businesses from across Canada. Other objectives included:
  • Strengthening trade ties with China and establishing and building on existing relationships with Chinese government, businesses and organizations.
  • The promotion and marketing of NWT wild fur in China, including raising awareness about Arctic traditional ways of life, in support of Canada’s Chairmanship of the Arctic Council.
  • The promotion of the NWT as an approved and exciting location for Chinese tourists, with an emphasis on Aboriginal tourism and aurora borealis viewing.
  • The promotion of the overall potential for mining in the NWT and of specific mining projects for the purpose of seeking investment capital.
