B.C. Spring trade missions showcase export market in Asia

Promoting exports in B.C.’s priority sectors such as digital media, education, clean technology and life sciences is the focus of upcoming spring trade missions to Asia by Minister of International Trade Teresa Wat and Minister of Advanced Education Andrew Wilkinson.

Wat will be travelling to China and Indonesia March 27-April 9, 2015, and Wilkinson will travel to China from March 27-April 5, 2015. They will travel on separate programs, but have joint meetings scheduled with government representatives and business stakeholders.

Wat’s mission also includes travel to Indonesia, which is the largest market within the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN). With over 600 million people and rapidly growing middle class, the ASEAN region represents a key growth market for British Columbia. Together, ASEAN markets rank fifth among destinations for B.C. goods exports and a number of major investments in B.C. have originated from ASEAN-based companies.

Canpotex Reaches Agreement with Chinese Customers

Canpotex has finalized potash supply contracts for 2015 with all of its major customers in China, including Sinofert (Sinochem Fertilizer Macao Commercial Offshore Ltd.). Pricing was confirmed with its customers at current competitive levels.

Canpotex expects its 2015 shipments to China will reach a minimum of approximately 1.8 million tonnes, surpassing the 1.6 million tonnes shipped in 2014. Under the parameters of its existing Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs), shipment volumes could increase to a maximum of approximately 2.5 million tonnes, depending on market demand, supply availability and logistics.

“We are encouraged by the strength we are seeing in Chinese potash demand,” said Steve Dechka, Canpotex’s President and Chief Executive Officer. “We believe these settlements help position our key customers in this region for continued growth and highlight Canpotex’s increasingly important role in supporting China’s rising potash needs. »
