CanCham Brings Canadian Sugar Shack Experience to China

On Sunday, January 26th, 2014, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai (CanCham Shanghai) presented its annual Canadian Sugar Shack experience at Big Bamboo Hongqiao. Expatriates and local Chinese, young and old, joined the festivities.

Besides the all-you-can-eat traditional buffet feast, the event offered the opportunity to sample Canada’s famous “maple taffy on snow” treat. A childhood favourite of many Canadians, maple taffy on snow, or “tire sur neige”, is made from pure maple syrup heated to 115°C, and poured on crushed ice or snow.

Sugar Shacks, or “cabanes à sucre”, are where the sap of the maple tree is boiled and made into maple syrup. There are more than 8,000 maple syrup businesses in Canada, many of which boast large dining halls with communal tables and dance floors. Between February and May, Canadians visit Sugar Shacks to enjoy maple taffy on snow, hearty meals and countryside activities.

To bring the Canadian Sugar Shack experience to Shanghai, CanCham Shanghai partnered with the online grocery store Fields China as the Maple Taffy Sponsor and provider of pure Canadian maple syrup.

The traditional all-you-can-eat Sugar Shack buffet feast included sausage & ham, baked beans, scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, bacon, split pea soup, cabbage slaw, sugar pie and of course, pure Canadian maple syrup.
