Canadian Consul General Engages Young Professionals in Shanghai

Shanghai, February 24, 2014 - The Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai (CanCham) organized a luncheon between Canadian Consul General Rick Savone and its Young Professional (YP) Members on February 20.

The event provided an opportunity for the next generation of Canada’s business community to better understand Sino-Canada relations, and discuss upcoming opportunities and challenges.  “Consul General Savone talked to us about how we can bring more awareness about China to Canada and encouraged us to take on the role of ambassadors to our family and friends,” said Kendra Puls, a CanCham Shanghai Young Professional Member and IT Business Engagement Manager at AstraZeneca.

Savone has been the Consul General in Shanghai since June 2012. He had high expectations for attendees, “For more than two generations, Canadians have been making a name for themselves in Shanghai and throughout China.  Building linkages, creating economic opportunity and moving our societies closer together.  Now, it’s your turn — the new generation of young professionals —  to take up the challenge at a time when the stakes are more important than ever.”

“Rick’s concern for our success was well received, and everyone in attendance appreciated hearing his advice based off of years of international experience as a career foreign service officer”, shared Radley Mackenzie who currently sits on CanCham’s Board of Directors and helps spearhead YP initiatives.

“Everyone was rolling up their sleeves, eating hamburgers and getting to know the Consul General,” said Chad Peterson, CanCham Member and Owner of Tiny Earth Trading. “It made me feel more connected to Canada.”

CanCham Shanghai’s Young Professionals membership is created for individuals 28 and under who wish to grow their knowledge of Canadian and Chinese business, interact with leaders from the Canadian business community in China and expand their social and professional networks.
